Our Student Success Story!

This is my Story!

My name is Gabriel Reyes Maldonado, and I have been a DACA recipient since 2013. I am originally from Oaxaca, Mexico, a region renowned for its people’s strong work ethic. In 2014, I enrolled at Bladen Community College in the Electrical Systems Technology program. After my first year, I expanded my studies by enrolling in the Industrial Systems Technology associate program, ultimately earning both degrees in May 2017.

During my first semester at BCC, I struggled with the complex terminology and theories of electrical systems. However, thanks to the unwavering support and guidance from Mr. Oxendine and Mr. Singletary, the electrical instructors at the time, I was able to rise to the top of my class. I distinctly remember Mr. Singletary remarking that few students ever earned an ‘A’ in his class because perfection was unattainable. However, my persistence and determination led to an ‘A’ in his Digital Electronics course. The most valuable lesson I learned from Mr. Singletary was the importance of doing things right the first time, so that I could walk away confident that my work would stand the test of time.

Mr. Oxendine was also a significant motivator. He not only provided me with a solid foundation in electrical principles but also shared his personal journey of returning to college while working full-time to earn his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

Two years after graduating from BCC, I was honored to receive a full-ride scholarship from TheDream.US, which enabled me to pursue my bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TN. During this time, I also worked full-time in the industrial sector. I graduated from CBU in May 2023, and I currently serve as the Electrical and Controls Engineer at Alpek Polyester USA in Fayetteville, NC.

I firmly believe that the foundational education I received at BCC was essential in helping me achieve the next level in my career. The instructors there did more than just teach; they inspired and motivated students like myself to pursue and accomplish goals that once seemed unattainable.
