    <p>Annually, the State Board of Community Colleges bestows a series of awards. Each of the 58 community colleges, through a peer selection method, nominates and recognizes individuals from their campus that exemplify the award criteria. These awards are given to celebrate, identify, and reward outstanding work and commitment to the community college mission.     <h5 style="text-align: center;" data-uw-styling-context="true"><strong>Dr. Joyce Bahhouth<br /></strong>2021 Excellence in Teaching Award</h5><p data-uw-styling-context="true">The Excellence in Teaching Award, sponsored by R.J. Reynolds, was established by the State Board of Community Colleges in 1985. This award provides statewide recognition of faculty members who exemplify the highest quality and standards of instruction throughout the NC Community College System.</p><p data-uw-styling-context="true"> </p>

In addition, the foundation of the institution where the recipient their non-teaching staff each calendar year. Each college recognizes its campus award winner and nominee in various, creative ways.</p>

    <p>All three of these students are shining examples of the caliber and determination that many of Bladen Community College students possess. Their stories and journeys are to be celebrated and not forgotten. Community colleges are in the business of hope and opportunity and that has never been more true than it is right now.     <p style="text-align: center;"><strong>Hannah Wheeless</strong><br />Academic Excellence Award</p><p style="text-align: left;">Hannah Wheeless, a college transfer graduate of the Class of 2021 is BCC's 2021 Academic Excellence Award recipient. Each year, a student from each of North Carolina’s 58 community colleges is nominated to be honored with the Award for Academic Excellence. At Bladen Community College, it is our tradition to recognize our nominee at our graduation ceremony. To be selected, the student must be currently enrolled, have completed at least 12 semester hours in an associate degree program, have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher, and is nominated by the community college faculty. Ms. Wheeless receives a certificate signed by the President of the North Carolina Community College System and a medallion as part of being recognized as one of the “Great Among the 58”.</p>

    <p style="text-align: center;"><strong>Michael Dunbar</strong><br />Gov. Robert Scott Leadership Award</p><p style="text-align: left;">Michael Dunbar, a welding technology graduate at Bladen Community College is BCC’s 2021 nominee for the Governor Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award. The award, sponsored by the North Carolina Association of Community College Presidents, was created in 2004 to recognize student leadership on a statewide level while also honoring Scott, one of the earliest supporters of the NC Community College System and its president from 1983 until 1994. Each state award recipient receives a plaque and a $1,000 scholarship from the NC Community Colleges Foundation.</p>

    <p style="text-align: center;"><strong>Cecil Butler</strong><br />Dr. Dallas Herring Achievement Award

Cecil Butler, an early childhood education graduate at Bladen Community College, is the 2021 nominee for the Dr. Dallas Herring Achievement Award. The award was established in 2010 by the NCACCP to honor the late Dr. Dallas Herring, considered one of the founding fathers of community colleges in North Carolina. The award is presented annually to a current or former student who best embodies Herring’s philosophy of “taking people where they are and carrying them as far as they can go.” The state recipient receives a plaque and a $1,000 scholarship from the NC Community Colleges Foundation.

Ending Balance for the 2020-2021 Academic Year


The Bladen Community College Foundation raises awareness, financial resources, and other assets to support the mission of Bladen Community College. The Foundation is committed to preserving and enhancing the resources with which it is entrusted through accuracy, transparency, and good stewardship. It supports student achievement through scholarships, provides opportunities for the faculty and staff to receive mini-grants for innovative programs, and assists with other campus needs. In spite of COVID-19, Gala Dinner To Go had great attendance, and perfect weather set the stage for a memorable occasion that resulted in significant funds raised to increase the amount and number of scholarships for Bladen Community College students. This course introduces basic nursing skills required to provide personal care for patients, residents, or clients in the healthcare setting. Topics include communications, safety, patient rights, CPR, personal care, vital signs, elimination, and nutrition emergencies. The course includes lecture, lab and clinical learning experiences. Upon satisfactory completion of the course, students are eligible to register to take the NC Nurse Aide I exam. After passing both the written and skills exams the students will be able to request listing on the NC Nurse Aide Registry and be considered a Certified Nurse Aide.
